Strengths and ChallengesToday we are reflecting on our strengths and weakness as far as group work. I think that my strongest of strengths is my leadership skills. This fits because I am a project manager and partially in charge of the entire exhibition. To have leadership skills means to be able to see the big picture and then break it down to designate what each person should be doing to achieve that bigger picture as effectively as possible. I have been taking a leadership role lately as we have been swinging into our first project. I have been looking around and designating jobs and as a result, people in a group with me look to me for guidance and jobs. Another strength of mine is taking risks and going big. This is a good quality to have when in a leadership position because it means that you will be more liable to attempt what might seem impossible at first and continue through with it, risking a waste of time and money on the gambit that you will gain even more. An example of me doing this is when we were prototyping our exhibitions. I decided that we should go bigger than anyone else and create an accurate digital representation of our prototype and use that as the centerpiece of our idea. This turned out beautifully.
Unfortunately, along with strengths, come weaknesses. For one, I am a deadly procrastinator and wait until the last minute to get things done. This usually leaves me struggling for a way to make it up in the last few days. I also sometimes have a problem with staying on topic. I see something interesting and leave the important stuff behind. With that in mind, I will have to go through this next project with the knowledge that we don’t have very much time to get a huge thing done. I will also request help from my group in staying on topic and on top of the assignments that we need to get done.

Project Forecast; Hopes and DreamsIn this project, I want to see us collaborating to meet self-set due-dates and helping each other to stay efficient. During the exhibition, I want to have us all working like a well-oiled machine and leave the audience feeling that they have learned something. By the end of the exhibition, my goal is to have the parents walk out still thinking about it and actually think about the cycle of socialization and the injustices that are being done to people that are in target groups. Also, I want the sociology professors to walk out of there impressed in the knowledge presented and the way it was shown and go to their classes the next day and talk to their students about the work that they saw at the exhibition.
On the topic of professors, I think that it would be beneficial to have someone from the sociology department at Fort Lewis to come down and look at our exhibition proposal and the content exhibited. This would allow us to have our information looked over and authenticated. Project StartupThe traditional exhibition involves standing in front of a board and lecturing to your parents about what you have been studying. For the class of 2020, that isn’t enough. For the last few weeks, we have been discussing, brainstorming, and prototyping what we want to see in our exhibition. This is called a design thinking process where we “build to understand”. We first brainstormed what we personally wanted, and then we clustered with people who wanted a similar thing to form our prototyping groups. We then made both a poster that could be distributed to the public, and a video accompanied by a short paragraph explaining our idea. After that, we presented these ideas to the rest of our grade and voted on which one to go forward with. The result was a combination of an identity maze and an escape room. This project is going to be trying to open the eyes of the public to problems that few people were even aware that existed.
In the accomplishment of this project, I am excited to apply for roles in management, construction/design, and performance. I feel that management would help my skills that I have been building as a facilitator and mediator as well as let me achieve a higher understanding of how this project fits in the community as well as how we can get it to have maximum impact in the community. I enjoy assisting in the design/construction of projects because I have been involved in several projects that are hands-on and have experience with power tools and design software. I also think that being acting in the actual exhibition would be fun and a great way to engage with the public. I don’t feel the need to be stuck to a specific set of details such as marketing, but I think that I would fit very well in the role of facilitator/manager and having the opportunity to engage in all of the departments. In working in groups recently, I have un-intentionally taken on the role of manager in the group and I feel that I have excelled. This was because people just started looking to me for help and, since I am a quick learner, I was able to analyze what was going wrong and helps them fix it. ~Jem van Tyn |
